A Message from Candace McDonald
Generation Rescue Executive Director
When I joined Generation Rescue, I knew I had found my home. I have worked in the non-profit industry for most of my career, always with passionate and dedicated volunteers, staffs and community members. I have had the opportunity to see what makes a great organization and what characteristics are most important for success.
So when I met JB Handley and Jenny McCarthy in 2008, I sensed something truly special. They were brave enough to say things others weren't saying and supporting families in a very unique way. They were committed to this for the long-term, determined to create a legacy. And as I researched, I took note of the thousands of families and groups of voices with similar beliefs. With a dedicated board of directors, science advisors, volunteers and a high-profile spokesperson to help spread the message, I saw the opportunity to be part of a movement that will change the landscape of autism for millions of families and for generations to come.
Beyond joining a terrific organization, Generation Rescue’s mission is very close to my heart. I have a family relationship with autism, and I’m also the mother of a vibrant young son. It is an amazing blessing when an important aspect of your personal life also becomes the heart and soul of your professional life, and the link I had already felt with the autism community has become a profound connection.
The autism community is incredibly special. We understand that no one can live this life on her or his own, and that no one should have to. Generation Rescue is honored to offer one of the keys for our community’s success—through our dedication to recovery by providing guidance and support for medical treatment, Generation Rescue directly improves a child’s quality of life for all families in need.
But our commitment does not exist in a vacuum. Generation Rescue collaborates with a wide range of organizations that provide research funding, advocacy impact and a variety of options for the support and education of the autism community.
Most importantly, Generation Rescue collaborates with families. We listen to the needs of autism families around the world, and we create programs to fill a void. We also learn something everyday from our families and we’re inspired by their stories.
Yes, I knew right away that my life would change when I joined Generation Rescue. But even though I “knew,” I really had no idea how enriching the change would be, how it would impact my son and my family, and how wonderful it is to create opportunities, celebrate successes and collaborate with a community that means so much to me.
Here’s to many more years of recovery, success and collaboration.
