Why I became a
Rescue Angel: |
When first diagnosed, we were devastated, to say the least. Not having any information, just someone slamming the A-word in your face, is the worst feeling in the world. I literally spent months on the computer just trying to find out anything about what we would be facing and what might help.

| Child's Symptoms: |
Babbled in only 2 syllables (ever) "N" and "B."
Unintelligible speech ("Spiderman" was "UH-uh-uh"; Superman was "UH-uh-uh") until over 5 years of age.
When he did begin speaking at 5-1/2, very precise speech (ie: compelled to list every single word in a specific title, instead of "Star Wars 5" is "Star Wars Episode 5 The Empire Strikes Back; if you ask him about Star Wars he will ask, "Star Wars The Original Trilogy or Star Wars The Complete Saga?") Also, he remembers EVERYTHING. May very possibly have idactic memory. If I can't find something, I ask him where it is, and he almost ALWAYS knows exactly where I left it. I was shopping for a Lego set for him, and they have Lego's at Fry's Marketplace stores (but not regular, smaller Fry's grocery stores). I drove by a particular store and pulled into the parking lot, and he said, "This store doesn't have Lego's" and he was right, it was a Fry's Food and Drug...the eery thing, we hadn't been to that location, about 35 miles from our home, in at least 2 years, since driving home from IKEA (BEFORE moving to the new house, which was 2 years ago)!
Odd verbal responses to questions: I have an uncle who works as a consultant on Monk and knows Shia La Beouf; when we visited him he asked Mikey about his favorite topic: Transformers, and Mikey answered, "Directed by Michael Bay". |
| Helpful Therapies: |
ABA, chelation, Music, OT, special-needs preschool (for 2.5 years), Service Dog(!). GFCF worked for several months, then saw diminishing returns. The service dog makes a HUGE difference in public. Without Grace he spins around CONSTANTLY in public, bumping into people and things and just being in his own world. Holding onto his service dog, he does NOT spin in circles, and seems much more consciously "with us."

I have a wonderful biomedical support group in Arizona and its growing and we've had so many new parent seeking biomedical interventions. I usually have people calling me for direction with doctors and therapys so this seems to be right up my alley. I feel I can give parents a lot of direction on were they will be able to start to find some of the many questions they have when they are first diagnosed. Being one of these parents 4.5 years I understand the desperacy a parent has and the answers never seem to come quick enough when its your child that is needing help. My son is 6 now and we are at a really good place with him and now I'm able to give back what other have given to me |
