Helping Your Family and Friends Understand Biomedical Treatment for Autism
When we first started treating Anthony via biomedical intervention, my friends and family were skeptical. Actually, I was pretty skeptical myself! After all, I had taken Anthony to many doctors before hand and none of them had helped him. But I quickly learned, bio-med was different.
As we ran tests and got results, I saw proof in black and white, that Anthony did indeed need medical attention. Seeing high yeast levels, Mitochondrial Dysfunction, Oxidative Stress, and thirty some food sensitivities.... well lets just say it was great motivation to stick with bio-med.
Within the first month of bio-med treatment, my family, and friends saw slight changes in Anthony. Mainly they heard it through his speech. But even then, my family & friends were not "true believers" in bio-medical intervention. When I mentioned food sensitivities, I saw the doubts in their eyes. I heard phrases like "Well a little bread won't hurt him, right?" and of course the speculation that nothing was really medically wrong with Anthony in the first place. He was just "quirky" and would catch up developmentally. I just needed to be more patient. But diet had a lot to do with Anthony's strange behaviors.
Most people are only aware of physical allergic reactions. Rashes, vomiting, difficulty swallowing and breathing. They are not aware of food sensitivities and their side effects. Friends & family members may think you are just being an over protective parent, but no, food sensitivities are quite real, and can result in behavioral and physical side effects. Symptoms & conditions like, irritable bowel, ear infections, headaches, eczema ADD/ADHD, and Autism, are common in children and adults suffering from food sensitivities.
When Anthony was tested for food allergies, Soy came back as a class 2 on the sensitivity scale. We removed it completely from his diet for over two months. Back then, being some what new to the food allergy world, I thought perhaps we could re-introduce Soy to Anthony's diet in little amounts. I purchased some soy pudding cups that Anthony seemed very excited about. I thought, why not, we'll see how it goes. However, this ended up being a big mistake! A mistake I would like to share with others, that opened a family members eyes and my own, to just how powerful bio-med can be.
Anthony enjoyed his first soy pudding cup with gusto. "Loved it" was the phrase he used. The next day, he talked me in to eating another one. And the day after that, one more. That is when all hell broke loose.
My sister from out of town was coming for a visit. We would meet up every couple of months for the day so the cousins could play together. It was during this visit that my own sister finally saw how diet could effect Anthony. Yes, I had told her about his food sensitivities, and how we had removed all these foods from his system, but I don't think she realized how serious it all was until the "Soy Pudding Cup Incident" happened.
My sister showed up at my home, and Anthony was already bouncing off the walls from the Soy. Every child is different, but when Anthony gets a food in his system he's allergic to, he becomes completely, utterly, no stopping him, HYPER. Let me be clear, this is not the typical hyper/excited child behavior. Anthony literally runs around the house with no attention to anyone, or anything. His actions have no purpose to them. Anthony also starts doing his old stimming behaviors. Dragging his head on the floor, lining up chairs and toys, and slapping himself. As every Warrior Parent out there knows, this is gut wrenching to watch.
It was during this allergic episodes, that Anthony was running around the kitchen and hit his head straight into our kitchen table and fell to the ground. I ran to him and held him in my arms and tried to calm him down. As I was consoling him, I glanced over at my sister. She looked concerned, shocked, and a little scared. I told her about the Soy pudding cups I had given him the past few days, and how I would not be giving those to him again, or any other type of Soy for that matter. He obviously was still very allergic to it.
What my sister didn't know, was this was Anthony's typical behavior before we ever did bio-med. Before we removed all his food allergens. Why she had never truly witnessed it before, is because Anthony has always thrived on stimulation. Meaning, whenever we would go out to a place like the mall, a family/friends house, a restaurant, the mass amount of stimulation always calmed Anthony. To the outside world, I probably had best behaved child there ever was. But being at home, in a calm setting, a setting where Anthony would have to make his own stimulation, he was a mess.
Later that night, my sister went home to her family and told my brother in-law about what she had seen. On that day she witnessed Anthony's stimming behaviors, dragging his head on the floor, drooling, the inability to focus, and the extreme hyperness. She cried as she told her husband, that for the first time she realized that Anthony truly did have a lot of medical issues going on. That I wasn't just being an over-protective mother to him. She wished for him to have a normal life, and that she saw so many challenges in his future that he would have to over come. Challenges that bio-medical intervention helped him conquer!
From that day on, my sister has been nothing but supportive when it comes to bio-medical intervention. Whenever we go over to her house, she always makes sure there are snacks Anthony can have. She is always joyful for us when test results show improvements, and she never questions me when it comes to Anthony's diet or supplements. After all, she has witnessed his recovery from an Autism Spectrum Disorder. She is now a believer!
My sister has also mentioned that she has learned a lot from watching Anthony go through bio-med. She has learned that allergies to foods can cause behavioral changes. Not just the typical upset stomach. And that supplements can make a huge difference in recovering a child from an Autism Spectrum Disorder.
