Sustaining Your GFCF Commitment

It’s been five and a half years since we’ve taken gluten and casein out of my son George’s diet and I have not had a day of regret about choosing to make changes in diet as part of my son’s path. Eating GFCF—and increasing the amount of true healing foods into my son’s diet—has helped him to sleep better, learn better, focus more and sustain a healthy digestive system…all things that seemed out of our reach for George.

There are many resources that help parents to transition off of gluten/casein and adapt to a GFCF diet, but there aren’t so many resources out there about helping families sustain their commitment and energy about staying on the diet long-term. As children enter elementary school, parents face challenges with our kids feeling left out of birthday and holiday celebrations. There are field trips and class parties; informal and formal family events—and parents need to stay on top of providing healthy choices for our kids in all of these situations. Even when families see the initial benefit of eating GFCF, they can sometimes hit a wall of burn-out after a few years.

Keeping this reality in mind, I want to emphasize an antidote to parent GFCF fatigue: making preparation of your GFCF food into a family affair. As a mom, cookbook author and cooking instructor for children of all abilities, I’ve witnessed how dramatic the effects of bringing children into the cooking process with you can be. Rather than children feeling like they are always left out of what peers are eating, families can put their children into the driver’s seat and nurture their development as they learn to prepare healthy food. This simple shift of making cooking into a time that builds connection and communication between you and your child can take away the parent’s feeling that preparing special food is just one more item for your to do list. Cooking together—even f it’s an activity you do once a week or once a month--becomes a time of sharing, exceitement and motivation rather than just a chore.

In a couple of weeks, I’ll be sharing all about cooking with kids at the Autism One/Generation Rescue conference and I hope that if you’re able to be there, you can join me to learn about how cooking with kids can:

1. Boost Developmental Skills: No doubt you are already helping your child to develop important fine and gross motor skills; to learn to read and do math. Cooking is an opportunity to work on ALL of these skills and more…in fact, in “The Kitchen Classroom,” I identify how each step of my recipes can be an opportunity to work on developmental skills.

2. Encourage Kids to try New Foods: It’s challenge to stay committed to a GFCF diet when children refuse to try new foods. Cooking is a multi-sensory experience that encourages children to small a variety of aromas and touch a number of textures. In my experience, children who’ve participated in a recipe are more willing to taste new foods. Even if you begin with one bite, you have room to grow each time that you cook together.

3. Develop Social Relationships: For children who struggle with making connections, cooking is an ideal activity to work on turn-taking, back and forth communication and sharing experience. In “The Kitchen Classroom”, I explain how you can “frame” a cooking experience to be successful for your child’s developmental level by setting it up with the supports that he/she may need. As cooking becomes successful for your child, he/she may be more and more eager to cook with you and you can make regular time for this experience-sharing activity.

I’ll be sharing lots more ideas about the benefits of cooking with your kids at the Autism One/Generation Rescue conference, and if you can’t join us at the conference, there will be live streaming available. I would love to hear your ideas and experiences in cooking with your kids and avoiding GFCF burnout!

Gabrielle Kaplan-Mayer blogs about family and food at www.kitchenclassroom4kids.com. She loves presenting about GFCF cooking with children of all abilities and can come to your organization in person or via skype!

A mother warrior is…

A Mother who hears there is no hope for her child and, instead of retreating and mourning, breaks down walls, weaves her way through Obstacles, follows her intuition even when people tell her she is crazy. She is a mother who believes in hope. A mother who believes in miracles and is able to carry on with strength and determination, even when her partner doubts her and offers no support. A mother who never gives up when she keeps hitting dead ends. These are the women who will continue to open the door so future generation of children don't have to suffer. These are the mothers with hears of gold and shields made of the strongest armor.

I know in my heart that someday this era will be marked as an era when a group of parents fought the giants to help save their babies and future generations. Magaret Mead, the late great sociologist, once said, "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has."

These are the women I walk beside proudly and whose numbers I hope will grow. We are the seekers of change. We are the seekers of truth.

We are the Mother Warriors and we will never give up.

With love,

Jenny McCarthy

What Makes a Warrior Mom?

As I was contemplating Mother's Day and what it means to those of us who are proud to be called Warrior Moms, I began to think about what it really means to be a Warrior Mom, someone that fights every day to help our children reach their greatest potential.

So What Makes a Warrior Mom?

She is one that never gives up, but sometimes gives in.

She believes in the impossible and makes true the improbable.

She is tough as nails, but soft as a pillow.

She curses like a sailor, but prays like a saint.

She will uproot her family just to keep it grounded.

She makes crazy food taste like CRAZY FOOD!

She tells the truth.

She wants you to know the truth too.

And because of that she can't keep her mouth shut!

She researches and researches, then follows her heart.

She doesn't take no for an answer.

She finds someone that will help, always.

She is someone that will help, always.

IEP's don't stand a chance against her.

She will get up in the middle of the night just to make sure the kids are alright.

She will find that supplement, NO. MATTER. WHAT.

If they make it GF she will find it.

She is very afraid, but you would never know it.

Above all, she is love!

Happy Mother's Day to all my favorite Warrior Mother's, far and wide. You rock. Really. You do. Don't ever forget it. Without you, our future would be no where.

Stay Well.
Maryann DellaRocco

The Spectrum Mum's Experience at the AutismOne/Generation Rescue Conference

I have been to many international autism conferences, but the AutismOne/Generation Rescue Conference is by far the best one I’ve been to worldwide. The moment I arrived at the conference, I felt so welcomed, like I was coming home to a family reunion rather than my first time at AO. I was so impressed with the conference that I started saving up for the AutismOne/Generation Rescue Conference 2012 the moment I got home. I even pre-registered for the conference and all the events as soon as I could, even though I wasn’t sure then if I could afford the trip. Because I knew, this year’s conference is going to be even better. As a friend said, she’s getting a bucket to save the money to go next year. I too have a very big bucket to fill, for Chicago is a long way from Kuala Lumpur.

People are amazed that I would travel halfway around the world to attend the conference. But honestly, the 27-hour flight is no big deal to me. Living with Autism is waaayy harder. The amount of knowledge I learnt and the amazing people I met there made it all worthwhile. This is the biggest autism conference worldwide with hundreds of lectures to choose from, what better place to learn and meet people as dedicated to recovering their children as you are? The flight, 13-hour time difference, insane jet lag and the unbelievable changes to my body rhythm did mess me up. I was sustained by coffee and little cups of yummy GFCF freebie food samples up and down the corridors whilst running to the next lecture. I kept wondering when I was going to crash and burn, yet my guardian angels kept watch over me. My days were filled with hope, affirmation and friendships. But at night I was tossing and turning, unable to sleep. How I ever managed to get to all the lectures and still sound sane and coherent during a conversation astounds me.

I missed my daughters but I knew they were safe and happy at home. I am blessed with a supportive husband and parents who took good care of Mei and Min Min while I was away. Without them I would never have been able to attend it. Prior to leaving, I was busy preparing supplement schedules, daily menus, emergency phone numbers and the many preparation required before leaving the girls for such a long time. Thus I packed my suitcase an hour before I left for the airport, not a good idea. I ended up with an odd assortment of mismatched clothes, 5 pairs of shoes, 4 handbags, 3 pairs of panties, 2 ball gowns, 1 frilly nightie and no bra! Luckily, there were a few shops near the conference hotel, phew!

Every single day was amazing, the lectures were eye-opening, at times I felt overwhelmed by the information overload. But I kept pushing myself to keep going, not wanting to miss a single precious minute of this amazing conference.

Some of my highlights at the conference;

I met so many inspiring individuals. Jenny McCarthy was filled with vitality, positive energy and even more luminous in life. She was wearing killer platform heels and I was in ballerina flats. Jenny had to crouch waaaayyy down for the photo hahaha! When I told her I came from Malaysia, she yelled, “Get out!!”

After 3 years of meeting Dr Andrew Wakefield at various conferences all over the world, I finally managed to get a photo taken with him. He gave me some sage advice in Hong Kong, which led us to some wonderful breakthroughs with Min Min. For that I will forever be grateful. Btw, Hubby is wondering how long I’ll use that photo on my FB profile….(sorry honey, I’m not ready to take it down just yet:-)

I volunteered at the Generation Rescue’s Lounge, a great way to help out and make even more friends. I even had a foot massage there, much needed after a long day.

I attended the Rescue Our Angels Cocktail Party & Silent Auction and met some lovely people especially the incredibly wonderful Tim Welsh aka Tanner’s Dad. A gentleman in every sense of the word. He has a name y’all…..

The Gala Night was full of joyful moments. It was a chance to dress up and feel glamorous. I sat with the best bunch of people ever including Tex, Goddess, The Count, Blaze, Sunshine and LuvBug. People I am privileged to call my friends and co-founders of The Thinking Moms’ Revolution.

I made out like a bandit at the Silent Auction, there were so many amazing goodies to choose from. I won the Book of the Year Collection! Though I have 5 of the 7 books already on Kindle version, I still wanted the autographed copies. They were bulky and heavy but I was determined to stuff them into my suitcase. I also won the raffle for a private breakfast with Dr Arthur Krigsman! Mind you, I must have bought 20 tickets and stuffed them all into that tiny box. And to those who asked; the breakfast was illuminating. I know what my focus will be, thank you for your kind advice Dr Krigsman.

Karaoke Night was brilliant! It was the most relaxed and fun night I’ve had in many many years. And to think that this year, I will be one of the hosts of Karaoke Night together with my Thinking Moms.

Though I am no longer in the fight against autism, it left a deep and dirty trail of illnesses and medical issues. The knowledge I learnt at the conference has brought me closer and closer to complete recovery for Mei and Min Min. The friendships I made there has changed my life for the better. I left the AutismOne/ Generation Rescue Conference at peace with the world and myself.

I hope to see you there!

Finding the Right Doctor

Finding the right doctor to heal your child with autism can be a tricky and difficult task. However, there are several resources such as the approved Doctor Listing right here on the Generation Rescue website. Each doctor is specially trained in autism treatments, has been recommended by parents in the community and has been vetted by Generation Rescue.

Another great place to start is right here on the GR website. Click on over to the Rescue Angels section and contact a Rescue Angel (a mom or dad in your area that is on this same journey and willing to help you get started). Email them and ask for names of doctors in your area that can help you with biomedical interventions. They will probably be able to give you names of not only DAN! Doctors (ARI doctors), but they may know of other doctors in your area that are using holistic approaches you may be interested in learning about. The Rescue Angels in my area are a plethora of information and I keep in regular contact with them. They always have new ideas and protocols to share.

Once you have your list of doctors contact them and learn as much as you can about their methods and practices. You need to feel comfortable with the doctor you choose. Every person is different, your doctor is no exception, their style may not work well with you or your child, or they may be the perfect fit. Shop around. It is perfectly fine. Your child only has one life, find the doctor that fits your situation best.

Don't shy away from the big names. We all know there are some big name doctors out there, don't be afraid to contact them, even if they are in another state. Many of them are willing to work with your local doctor to help develop a protocol for your child, while some will even Skype with you in lieu of a traditional appointment. If you feel your child could benefit from seeing a big name doctor, give them a call and see if they can work with you and your situation.

Don't discount the local doctor. Although your local DAN! May not have a big name or a book, doesn't mean they aren't knowledgeable and very willing to help your child. We have not seen a big name doctor yet, although I have toyed with the idea, and Matthew has made tremendous improvement.

When it is time to move on, move on. Sometimes you may exhaust your doctor’s ability to help your child. It happens. We are on doctor #3. Each doctor has played an important role in Matthew's recovery and I think we found each at the right time. But there has come a time when we wanted to do something else or the doctor wasn't aggressive enough; whatever the issue we moved on. I talk with every biomedical parent I meet and learn from them. I find out what their doctor is focusing on and then see if those same ideas apply to Matthew. Sometimes they do and sometimes they don't. We weigh the value of trying another doctor or keeping the one we have. Sometimes, shh don't tell anyone, but sometimes we even see more than one and have them work together.

This is your child's life and it is up to you to take charge of the situation. Find all the resources you can, and make the best-informed decisions for your child's health.

Stay Well.
Maryann DellaRocco

About the Author
Maryann DellaRocco is the mother behind the blog Matthew’s Puzzle, which chronicles her journey into the world of autism and biomedical interventions.
Age of Autism The Year in Review & All WE Can Handle. WE’RE No Mother Teresa with Kim Stagliano

We'll talk about diagnosis, growing up, bullying, school issues and for those with older kids, "what's next." The session will be interactive (don't worry, Kim will not attempt to saw you in half on stage) and follows the AofA presentation. Feel free to bring a cocktail.

Adrenals and a Review of Other Hormones Including Thyroid and Growth Hormone

Sunday, May 27 - 12:30pm

Dr. West will discuss the hormonal pathways and how they have been affected by chronic illness and stress. We will focus mostly on the adrenals. People are scared of the word hormone, but remember, this includes "STRESS " hormones. One of the reasons good fats are so important is because fats are the precursors to our hormones. We will discuss how this allows for inflammation to persist, including what I call "mental inflammation." We all know how much inflammation plays a role in our children's illness.

KEYNOTE: The Micobial Track with Luc Montagnier

Friday, May 25 – 11:30am

There is in the blood of most autistic children-but not in healthy children-DNA sequences that emit, in certain conditions, electromagnetic waves. A therapy first started by a group of independent clinicians and now performed in conjunction with laboratory observations reinforces the idea that systemic bacterial infections play a role in the genesis of symptoms of autism. Our GPs have observed that a long-term therapy consisting of successive antibiotic treatments with accompanying medications induced in 60% of cases a significant improvement-sometimes even a complete resolution of symptoms. Our working hypothesis is that immune dysfunction associated with inflammation of the intestinal mucosa leads to the introduction of bacterial components, including neurotoxins,
into the bloodstream, creating oxidative stress as well as microvascularities, especially affecting meningeal vessels and finally specific neuronal damage.

5 Steps to Nurturing Your Marriage

My husband and I are coming up on our eleventh anniversary this June. Like many brides, I thought that on my wedding, I knew well the man I was committing my life to. What I’ve learned since that day is that every wedding is a leap of faith and that as much as I thought that I knew my husband well through our years of dating and engagement, it is the joys and challenges that life brings that really reveals the true nature of your partner.

Like other families whose child has been diagnosed with autism, my husband and I shoulder big responsibilities: finding the best therapies for our child, navigating the school system, planning for his future. We are both busy with our careers, our other daughter, obligations to family and community. At times, the responsibilities, fears and daily challenges that come with raising a child with autism have overwhelmed us, driven us to take out our anger and frustration on one other and turned us away from each other.

But fortunately, in these painful moments, we rise out of them and remember that we are partners in our parenting journey and in our life. We do our best to turn towards each other and offer support when one of us is feeling especially down or drained. What I’ve realized is that the man I committed my life to has more strength and vision than I ever could have imagined when I married him, and that it takes work, for any marriage, to come together to overcome obstacles…but it is very possible.

The Top 5 Ways That We’ve Been Able to Support our Marriage Include:

1. Give each other space to grieve: I wish that when my son had been diagnosed that there had been a social worker present to address the impact of the diagnosis on us as parents and to offer guidance. There wasn’t—and I know for most families, there isn’t. We found our own path to support but also each realized in our own time that we needed to allow ourselves to grieve. Our processes were different and it was important that we respected each other’s grieving process.

2. Make time to be a couple: We set a monthly date and try and go out twice/month when possible or meet for lunch during the day. Even when we’ve been really broke, we’d find a friend to watch the kids and go for a walk. Taking time away—even if you’re feeling down or exhausted—is so important to staying connected.

3. Have each other’s back: There are some weeks when I’m not on my A game, and some weeks when my husband needs to give attention outward and not do as much at home. We make sure that we pick up the slack for each other, knowing that we’ll cover for each other as needed. We don’t keep tabs of who’s doing more with the house or kids, keeping in mind that we are in partnership and both working hard towards the common good.

4. Get help: With all of the therapies that autism parents are juggling, you may think I’m crazy to suggest adding a therapy appointment, but we’ve found that going to couples’ therapy when we were really challenged helped us enormously. Before we had time to start therapy, we began by reading a book called Getting the Love You Want by Harville Hendrix. It was a game changer for us.

5. Make time, daily, to connect about things other than your child: Even if it’s 15 minutes of watching “The Daily Show” or a quick chat about a movie we want to see, we keep conversations going about your interests and passions. It’s so important to remember that your partner is your friend above all and that you have the ability to create a loving marriage that is nothing if deeper and stronger because of the challenges that you face.

Generation Rescue Teams Up with Inspirato’s Inspired Giving to Help Children with Autism

Fundraising with Luxury Travel Will Fund Autism Treatment for Families Who Can’t Afford It

DENVER, April 25, 2012 – Generation Rescue, and Inspirato takes people to global locations far and wide to experience the magic of luxury vacations. The two organizations have joined together in a new partnership through Inspirato’s Inspired Giving new online giving platform, www.inspiredgiving.com. The partnership helps Generation Rescue – headed up by celebrity Jenny McCarthy – develop an additional source of year‐round revenue for its work. Generation Rescue provides guidance and support for medical treatment to directly improve the quality of life for children, adults and families affected by autism. April is National Autism Awareness Month.

Inspirato’s Inspired Giving was designed to help charitable organizations like Generation Rescue raise funds in a new way. Through this partnership, donors who contribute $2,000 through the Inspired Giving website to Generation Rescue’s cause gain select access to Inspirato’s club‐managed portfolio of vacation residences and unparalleled personal vacation services in locations ranging from California and Colorado to Hawaii and Mexico.

The Inspired Giving donation model benefits Generation Rescue in a number of ways:

For every $2,000 donated to Generation Rescue through Inspirato’s Inspired Giving website, the donor gains one‐time access to an Inspirato luxury vacation – priced at up to 50 percent under market value, and bypassing the $15,000 Inspirato membership fee.

Inspirato contributes one Inspired Giving vacation that Generation Rescue can auction to raise funds. Of those contributed monies, 100 percent goes back to Generation Rescue.

For every new Inspirato membership that is generated from a Generation Rescue donor through Inspired Giving, the company gives $2,000 to Generation Rescue as an Inspirato Inspired Giving partner.

Generation Rescue will include an Inspired Giving trip at a live auction during the organization’s 5th Annual Rescue Our Angels benefit on May 24 in Chicago, Ill. Funds raised will directly support treatment for families in need.

“Autism treatment costs a family $70,000 a year on average. For many families, this is absolutely cost prohibitive,” said Candace McDonald, executive director of Generation Rescue. “Through our partnership with Inspirato, we hope to be able to fund at least five medical grants for families in need. This opportunity gives us access to a new demographic of potential donors who value high‐ end leisure travel with a cause.”

Generation Rescue’s goal is to help families with autism access resources in their community and nationwide, and offers education, support and treatment options to more than 25,000 families per year. It provides medical grants to support families who cannot afford treatment, operates a 24‐ hour hotline service, co‐hosts one of the largest autism conferences in the country to educate parents on treatment options, and trains doctors to treat patients with autism spectrum disorders.

Sandra and her five‐year‐old son, Amar, are among the thousands of families who benefit from Generation Rescue’s work – which includes funding biomedical treatment and guiding families on how to implement diet changes to address the root causes and symptoms of autism. Sandra said, “I can honestly say that after a few months on the Gluten Free Casein Free diet, suggested by Generation Rescue, I have seen my son improve. He is no longer talking to himself or talking into space, which is such a relief and a positive outcome. This grant is the best thing that has ever happened to our family.”

For Generation Rescue’s donors, the donation and vacation booking experience is simple: the donor is given access to Inspirato’s Inspired Giving exclusive web portal, www.inspiredgiving.com; selects Generation Rescue as the charitable organization of choice; and makes a tax‐deductible donation of $2,000. That donor is then able to book a vacation to a luxury Inspirato destination and enjoy all that Inspirato members enjoy, including: personalized service from an Inspirato vacation advisor, an on‐site destination concierge, and luxurious accommodations ranging from intimate, couples‐ only, one‐bedroom retreats to large, well‐appointed homes in excess of 3,000 square feet.

“Inspired Giving is committed to help build a better world through better vacations,” said Jackie Benton, the program’s executive director. “We are in the fortunate position of bringing an innovative fundraising opportunity to Generation Rescue and provide another avenue of revenue for its important programs.”

About Generation Rescue

Generation Rescue is dedicated to recovery for children with autism spectrum disorders by providing guidance and support for medical treatment to directly improve the child’s quality of life for all families in need. Inspired by the journey of their son, Jamison, JB & Lisa Handley founded Generation Rescue in 2005. When Jenny McCarthy first made public her own experience with her son’s diagnosis and subsequent recovery from autism, her unique ability to articulate the unspoken words of thousands of mothers and fathers across the world was recognized immediately. In 2008, she proudly became President of Generation Rescue. Learn more at www.generationrescue.org.

Gluten-Free Playdough

When you are on a gluten-free diet it is important for your playdough and art supplies to be gluten-free. Anything your child touches (or might ingest) should be free of your child's food allergens. Here's a recipe I came to after several failures--from rubbery to soupy. This one works and is easy.

Gluten-Free Playdough

3/4 Cup White Rice Flour

3/4 Cup Cornstarch

3/4 Cup Salt

1 Tbsp Cream of Tartar (same thing as tartaric acid powder – NOT tartar sauce)

2 tsp olive or seed oil

1 ½ Cup Water, hot but not boiling

Food Coloring, as desired

Directions:

Add all dry ingredients in a pot. Add vegetable oil, then the water, and continue to mix until thoroughly combined. Then turn on heat. Heat the pot on the stove over low heat - stir continuously for about 3 minutes. When the dough pulls away from the sides into a big ball, place dough into glass bowl

Once cool enough to handle. Divide into 3-5 pieces. Add several drops of natural food coloring to the ball and massage until you get the color you desire. I like to make an indentation in the ball, drop in the food coloring, fold the ball over so the color is in the middle, and slowly knead until color is blended. If the dough is too wet, add cornstarch. If it’s too dry, massage in a bit of water. It's a fun post and easy to do. Here it is.

It's really fun to make playdough. You can feel good about this playdough, especially if your child eats playdough like mine does.

I have more ideas on storing your playdough, mixing colors, and playdough molds at: http://nourishinghope.com/2012/03/gluten-free-playdough-recipe/

About Generation Rescue:

Generation Rescue was founded in 2005 by JB & Lisa Handley, parents of an autistic child who couldn’t find adequate services for their son. The organization started off as a web site offering support, local resources and information for families in need. Since then it has grown into an international organization helping families in 39 countries around the world. In 2008, actress and best selling author Jenny McCarthy joined the organization as spokesperson and board member to create and spread awareness about autism. After her son Evan was diagnosed, she met thousands of parents around the country and quickly came to a realization: her story is the same story being told in neighborhoods all over America. Families like hers were seeking resources and guidance in finding doctors and treatment options.

Over the course of a year more than 25,000 families receive services through mentoring, a toll free hotline, the website, conferences and a grant program.

Enzymes and Autism

When I was pregnant, I read all of the most popular pregnancy books, and I never saw a chapter called: “What to do when your child is diagnosed with autism.” They must have left those chapters out of my books.

It would seem that when your child receives a diagnosis of autism, you are suddenly expected to have a special degree in developmental disorders if you want to understand what the professionals are talking about. Honestly, I have been training in autism treatment for over 4 years now, and I still have a hard time pronouncing some of the language used in the mainstream press and books on this topic. My guess is that many of you are like me and you did not go to medical school. You just want to understand enough of the basic terminology so that you can help your child.

That brings us to the topic of enzymes. Before my son was born, the only thing I recall hearing about enzymes was that they were in my laundry detergent and household cleansers. But as I have come to see, enzymes are also a part of human biology. I soon learned that the application of enzymes for autism is a lot more complicated than getting grass stains out of your jeans. To make this easier on you, I am not going to explain how enzymes work with words I can’t even spell. Instead, I am going to talk in mom-friendly terms and just give you the basics you need to know to help your child.

Digestive Enzymes

These are substances that break down the food we consume. They make it possible for us to absorb nutrients and eliminate waste. Digestive enzymes are produced by the body and can be taken as a supplement. A digestive enzyme is a great place to start when incorporating enzymes into your plan of action.

What are phenols?

It is important to know that phenols are in almost all foods we eat, however, there are certain foods that have higher levels of phenols in them. Some foods that are higher in phenols are things such as (but not limited to): bananas, chocolate, cheese, apples, grapes, and tomatoes. Phenols are also in a lot of the fruit we eat.

How do phenols affect children with autism?
Some children may experience:

Laughing at inappropriate time (at night or when something is not funny.)

Strange rashes that appear on the body

Up and down behaviors and moods

Self stimulatory behaviors

Night wakening

Difficult or irregular stools (with constipation, diarrhea or undigested foods.)

Headaches

Physical symptoms such as red ears and cheeks, and dark circles under the eyes.

How are phenolic compounds detrimental to individuals suffering from phenol sensitivities?

Some experts believe that phenolic compounds can become “trapped” within the body’s metabolic cycles, affecting our various detoxification pathways.

Is there any treatment?
While it may be possible to reduce one’s consumption of the phenols and salicylate compounds found in food additives such as colorants and flavorings, phenols are relatively omnipresent in all plant-based foods. In addition to the dietary restrictions, a digestive enzyme supplement containing xylanase specific for phenol digestion may help reduce symptoms.

Are there any websites that talk about phenols and diet?
www.feingold.org

Why enzymes for Autism?

While I cannot speak for all children diagnosed with autism, I can tell you that many of the children I come into contact with, including my son, have digestive issues. I provide my son with what I believe to be the cleanest and best diet possible, and yet his body really needs supplemental enzymes for optimal digestion. Perhaps his body is unable to produce enough enzymes by itself. Regardless, he has greatly benefited from the supplemental enzymes I give him in conjunction with the dietary modifications we have made. This became particularly clear to me when I learned that the vitamins and nutrients in his diet cannot be properly absorbed into his body and brain without enzymes to break them down and prepare them for assimilation.

What is the connection between autism and digestion?

Current research has showed that the brain and body influence one other in countless ways. I believe like many others that there is a brain-gut connection. As a mom, it makes sense to me that when my child’s digestive system is not working properly he will feel poorly and act out, to make this fact known. I know from my own experience that if I am feeling ill, it is generally difficult to concentrate and process new information. More importantly, I become cranky as indigestion affects my behavior and how I cope.

My belief in the brain-gut connection was reinforced after my son’s blood tests, when I was informed that when he eats certain foods, substances are released into his blood that severely disrupt his brain function.

To understand how the brain-gut connection works, it might help to relate the experience to something that you are familiar with in your daily life. Think about how you feel when you consume a glass of wine. Do you think your brain is affected by the wine? Of course it is. Each and every substance we put into our bodies has a direct affect on how we function and feel, whether it is food, drink, or medications.

If the body makes enzymes, why supplement?

Some children on the autism spectrum, like my son, do not make a sufficient amount of enzymes to facilitate optimal digestion. When you see a child experience cramping, bloating, constipation or diarrhea, it is a clear sign that something is not working properly.

*Note to parents: look at your child’s poop patterns. Look at the consistency, the color, and if there are food particles remaining. These are signs to help gauge the effectiveness of your child’s digestive process.

If I supplement enzymes, does that mean my child’s body will stop making them?

No, your child’s body will not stop making them. You are simply giving your child’s body a break, reducing digestive stress. Keep in mind, it takes up to 80% of our body’s energy to digest our food. So many of our children, my son included, are working hard in other ways to rid their bodies of toxins. Reducing the stress on our children’s digestive systems can be enormously beneficial to aid detoxification.

Can I use enzymes as an alternative to any special diets?

I do not recommend using enzymes as an alternative to dietary modification. I have seen with my own son that when I combine diet and enzymes, it brings the best of both worlds together.

Some diets to consider are: the Gluten Free / Casein Free Diet, the Specific Carbohydrate Diet, the Body Ecology Diet, and the Feingold Diet. For more information on these diets check out the following websites:

www.gfcfdiet.com
www.pecanbread.com

Are all enzymes created equal?

All enzymes are not created equal. Here are some things to consider when evaluating an enzyme supplement: Is the product a broad spectrum enzyme? Does it address different pH and temperature ranges? How are the ingredients in the formula measured? (Some companies measure their product in weight, which tells you nothing about the potency of the ingredients.) Lastly, I encourage you to investigate the manufacturer. I prefer buying supplements from a company that has a high level of integrity and takes pride in their products.

Tips on how to give your child enzymes if they do not swallow capsules:

Twist open the capsule and mix it with a small amount of water or juice, depending on what diet your child is on. Stir and have your child drink it down before the first bite of food. With digestive enzymes you will be giving the product with food, and for therapeutic enzymes you will be offering it on an empty stomach.

If your child resists taking enzymes in liquid, try opening the capsule and mix it in applesauce, pear sauce or whatever is allowed on their diet. Give it to your child all in one bite. You can do this with both digestive and therapeutic enzymes.

*Note to parents: When using any method, which requires opening a capsule, you may see some irritation around your child’s mouth. This is not something to worry about and it has an easy solution. The cause: generally, such irritation is the result of the enzymes breaking up dead skin cells around the mouth. The remedy: put a small amount of olive oil on a washcloth and dab your child’s lips and the corners of the mouth. This will act as a barrier.

For more on enzymes, digestion and Autism treatment, visit:
www.enzymedica.com
www.dietfordigestion.com
www.autismhopealliance.org

Autism, Anxiety & Adrenal Glands

Anxiety is common among individuals with an Autism Spectrum Disorder. Anxiety is normal in small amounts, or during specific events such as exams or starting a new job. However, when the feelings of worry, nervousness, apprehension or uneasiness are strong enough and often enough to prevent an enjoyment of life, or to cause a person to avoid many situations, then that anxiety has become a big problem. If anxiety is also occurring with other symptoms such as on-going fatigue, sluggishness, insomnia, cloudy thinking, difficulty remembering, craving sugar and salt, depression, and others, then there is a good chance that a person could be suffering from poor adrenal function, sometimes called adrenal fatigue or adrenal exhaustion. These are just shorthand terms to indicate that the adrenal glands, crucial to good health, are not functioning properly.

The adrenal glands are part of our endocrine system. These two glands, the size of grapes and located on top of our kidneys, are responsible for over 50 hormones, among them adrenaline and cortisol. In a stressful situation, our bodies release adrenaline to try to deal with the stress. Thousands of years ago, the stressful situation would have been something like seeing a predator. Nowadays, our stressful situations are very different, and might be something more like having to meet new people. Clearly, adrenaline is a good response to threat from a predator (this fight or flight response will help you survive), but not a good response to our modern day stressors. However, to our bodies, the perceived threat and its response to it is exactly the same. After adrenaline is released, the adrenal glands release cortisol. Adrenaline doesn't last long, but cortisol does. If you perceive continual stress, the adrenals will continue to release cortisol. We are supposed to release cortisol, at naturally fluctuating levels, throughout the day to maintain our health. However, if we are releasing too much of it too often, the adrenal glands will eventually not be able to release sufficient cortisol, which will cause other health problems.

So, anxiety and other stress-related problems are not just in our heads. They are intricately related to a complex system in our body called the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA or HTPA) axis. This involves our hypothalamus, pituitary gland, adrenal glands, and controls our reactions to stress. But also controls many other aspects of our health such as digestion, immune system, energy levels, sexuality, moods and emotions. If one part of this axis, such as the adrenal glands, is overworked, then the whole system can start malfunctioning. Although anxiety has long been viewed as a purely psychological issue, remedied only by removing environmental stressors and counseling, it is very much a physical issue which has physical effects and causes that need to be addressed.

Histamine and other things involved in allergy and sensitivity reactions also affect functioning of adrenal glands – see this excellent video interview with Dr Theoharides who authored the paper titled "Allergic Symptoms" in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders. More than Meets the Eye?”. There is now good reason to believe that individuals with autism produce a lot more histamine and other inflammatory chemicals in their bodies. Histamine is the chemical (neurotransmitter) your body produces when you're having an allergic reaction – whether a true allergy or a `sensitivity' reaction. Some of the symptoms that show up when you are sensitive to foods or things from the environment can be skin reactions (blotches, eczema, acne), irritable bowel, constipation, bloating, dizziness, panic attacks, compulsive tendencies, depression and headaches, irregular sleep/insomnia all very common in autism. Our adrenal glands produce adrenaline in order to block histamine, in individuals who are sensitive to surroundings their adrenals will be working overtime. In addition to this, all the adrenaline produced this way will make a person feel more anxious, fearful and impulsive, even sometimes more aggressive.

There are ways to help adrenal glands that no longer work optimally and improve your physical and mental health as a result. Some of these ways seem quite easy, such as getting more sleep (not simple if one of your symptoms is insomnia or unrestful sleep). If your symptoms are more than just mild, it may take some time and effort to turn things around. We at, Treating Autism, believe in biomedical approaches to addressing these and other health problems underlying the surface symptoms of autism - treating the body in ways that help it recover to a state of health.
Cleansing, Detoxification and Rejuvenation Step 7 of “The Wagner Way to Wellness”

Get a Lifetime Wellness Warranty

In this article I want to start the discussion of cleansing, detoxifying and rejuvenation. Not only for the colon and bowels but for the entire body. This article will establish all the areas in which we need to cleanse and renew ourselves. Then in following articles I will give a detailed discussion on how to detoxify, cleanse, purify and rejuvenate each of those separate areas. Each type of cleansing is just as important as the other area and each need to be attended to every year, on a regular basis, not just once but continuously. You don't take just one bath, or dust your house once, or do one oil change for the car, instead you have a regular maintenance schedule that if followed properly, the body, house and car can last a long time. But if ignored they will become filthy, fall apart and not service you very well. So I recommend that you establish a maintenance schedule for the internal body similar to the maintenance schedule you have for your home and car. If you would do so, you would be providing yourself with a Lifetime Wellness Warranty.

JENNY'S EXPERIENCE

This is what Jenny has done with me for over a decade and continues to do so. She first came to me to cleanse, detoxify and rebuild her entire body, and then we established her ongoing wellness program. She would like to share with you her own testimony regarding her success:

"Dr. Bo Wagner is my hero. My life has been totally changed or should I say been saved by his Wagner Way to Wellness® program. I began seeing Dr. Wagner in 2002 and the first thing he had me do was his complete detoxification and rejuvenation program “The Total Body Wellness.” After the first week of taking lots of powerful superfoods, supplements, and cleansing products, I immediately noticed a difference. My energy level increased to when I was a kid, my body started to become lean and young again, and with the help of Colon Magic®, I established great daily intestinal regularity instead of once every 14 days! Once I was done cleansing, I began eating and combining my foods according to his “Guide for Smart Food Choices” and taking his daily essential vitamins, minerals and Superfoods."

FULL BODY, FULL ON

Everyone can experience improved wellness. This is why Jenny has asked me to share my lifestyle plan and programs with you. Even if you exercised regularly, hydrated properly, made smart food choices, combined them correctly and took all your essential daily supplements, if you don't remove the waste, your body will become very toxic and you will re-absorb the toxins, auto-intoxicating yourself, so all 7 steps of my Wagner Way to Wellness is equally important.

So let's take a look at the areas we need to cleanse, detoxify and renew and what it would take to accomplish this and establish a healthy Full Body, Full On® maintenance plan granting you a Lifetime Wellness Warranty.

COB-WEB CITY

We know that in order to be clean and healthy, we must cleanse the outside of our bodies everyday or we get funky pretty fast. But we rarely clean the inside. That would be like washing and waxing the outside of your car everyday but never lifting the hood and doing an oil change or tune up. It would shine, but before long, the car would have all kinds of problems, fall apart and stop running. If you lived in a palace and washed and painted your mansion everyday but never dusted the inside, eventually this palatial home would become a cob-web city, even if you were a clean and tidy person. Because the majority of our nation has never done a Full Body, Full On® cleansing and rejuvenation program, most of us have become just that, a Cob-Web City inside.

Most of the time people are doing great things for the exterior of the body such as washing, scrubbing, brushing the external body, applying creams, lotions, gels, sprays, soaking in hot tubs, saunas and steam baths, getting massages, manicures, pedicures and our hair done, all of which are necessary and very healthy, but never attending to the internal. The outside is just a cover; a reflection of our internal health. The mechanics are on the inside.

I would like to acknowledge that most parents with children with ASD are so busy attending to these children; they have very little if any time to do the above mentioned activities. That is why Jenny and I are so concern to help you come up with a doable plan to make sure the entire family is taken care of, and if the parents of these families are able to accomplish this, they will be able to stay healthy and be better equipped to serve their families.

GET SERVICED

Its time all of us take responsibility of our personal health and lift our own hoods and do some oil changes and a tune up. Most of the population needs to do a serious personal overhaul. Everyone should develop a cleansing and rebuilding maintenance program like you do your car. Every year we do an oil change on our vehicles every three to ten thousand miles and then an annual tune up. We dust our houses frequently and seasonally a spring housing cleaning. We need to set aside some time to service our bodies and personally do the equivalent of an oil change several times a year and then at least once a year an annual tune up/overhaul. If you would do this, you will never allow toxins and poisons to build up and become a breeding ground for disease.

AREAS TO CLEANSE AND RENEW

This maintenance program should not only be for the colon but for the entire body. A system to detoxify the colon, cleanse the entire alimentary canal, flush the organs, rid the body of lymphatic waste, trim excess fat and weight, cleanse the arteries, blood vessels and capillaries and re-establish the peristalsis, the wavelike motions in our colon, esophagus and cardiovascular system. Plus everyone should do periodic arterial compliance testing to monitor ones cardiovascular health and biological age. A true Full Body, Full On road map to health.

ALL PARTS ARE EQUAL

If the right front tire goes flat, the whole car comes to a halt. If the radiator blows up or you throw a rod, your engine will not run. If your oil filter is plugged, you’re circulating dirty oil and if you’re electrical system short circuits, your electric windows, seats, and radio will stop and you will have no lights. Every working part of the car has an influence on the whole vehicle.

The same goes for the human vehicle. If you break a leg, you’re hobbling around and it’s hard to get anywhere. If your lungs collapse, you cannot breathe, and life will cease to exist. If your organs are full of waste, you can’t filter and if your heart stops beating you are done for. So every part of the body affects all other parts making all equally important.

That is why it is necessary to attend to the whole being. To run a diagnostic test on the heart and cardiovascular system, to flush the liver, gall bladder and kidneys, to cleanse out the old fecal plaque and parasites in the colon, to eliminate lymphatic waste and fatty deposits, to cleanse, detox, purify and repair every cell, tissue, organs, and systems in the entire body. There is a separate Full Body, Full On program to attend to each of these particular areas. These services can be done individually, making it very easy and inexpensive and done throughout the year or you can do an all-in-one Total Body Wellness program and accomplish all the different cleanses at one time each year. It is very important that you do the servicing regularly to maintain and keep in good standing your Lifetime Warranty of Wellness.

A NEW LEASE ON LIFE

So you can see, it is not about having just a good elimination, or just doing a liver flush, or just losing weight, or just lowering your blood pressure, it’s about servicing, repairing and maintaining your entire being to achieve total body wellness, total trim fitness and be timeless forever. By following the principles of all the Full Body, Full On® detoxification, rejuvenation and weight management programs, you can achieve what my clients have stated they have experienced, A New Lease on Life.

The Full Body, Full On programs have been shown to help my clients to have less aches and pains, less puffiness, trimmer and leaner bodies, increased energy and vitality, feel young and alive, improved mental clarity and focus, better digestion and assimilation, to maintain normal healthy levels of cholesterol, intestinal regularity, blood glucose levels after meals, and a healthy cardiovascular system and circulation.

PREPARE TO START

The checkered flag is up, so it’s time to start your engines, and begin your own Full Body Full On program and receive your own New Lease on Life with a Lifetime Wellness Warranty.

To Your Good Health,
Dr. Bo

“I Have Joined The Club Of Mother Warriors”

When you are ready to start biomedical treatment to heal your child with autism, there are Moms and Dads and doctors and mentors out there with a WEALTH of knowledge and experience. I am not yet one of them unfortunately! I am still like you, learning, worrying, hoping. I have joined the club of Mother Warriors, and I am humbled by all that I don’t know yet. I believe in the cause, I respect the leaders, I have devoted everything I am to giving my son back the health and the future he was born to have. If you found your way to this site, you are probably looking for a place to start. I do know how to start, and sometimes starting is the hardest part.

Here are some steps that helped us get started:

Read, read and read more. Then, I chose a couple go-to sources for recipes and tips after I realized I was spending too much time reading when I had cooking to do. There is a lot of fascinating information out there to learn, but I realized I didn’t have to learn it all in the first week! I chose the Generation Rescue and TACANOW websites, gfcfdiet.com, and the book Special Diets for Special Kids. It came with a CD of 200 recipes to get started.

I was determined to make the change quickly, and for that to work with my family, I focused on GFCFSF for Aidan only while the gluten-dairy loving rest of us have made more subtle improvements. Whole grains, less dairy, elimination of artificial colors and high fructose corn syrup. I giant bag of flax sits on the counter to be sprinkled on anything that doesn’t move.

The cost of the prepackaged food was daunting to me with a large family. I found that if a packaged GF item was the same price as a regular item the package was half the size and if the package was the same size as regular, it cost more than a prime cut of meat. Off to the specialty market for assorted bulk flours that I mix into all purpose GF. Cost effective and not too difficult. I even tried making my own flour from rice and almonds in my coffee grinder following directions I found online. I admire the people who can do that, I am not one of them.

Move favorite non-GFCFSF foods out of sight. To the top of the fridge, to the back of the pantry. I can’t get rid of everything the rest of my family likes, but I can at least not let my little guy have to face Tony the Tiger if he opens the pantry.

Designate space for approved foods so that anyone can help my GFCFSF guy grab a snack without having to call me. I made the bottom shelf of the fridge, the produce drawers, and the buffet in the dining room GFCF zones.

When I realized I was wasting time rereading labels to check ingredients on foods that everyone could have, our fries, jarred pasta sauce, tortilla chips where already GF, I put blue painters tape on the package to signify it was “safe.” Sounds a little obsessive, but with three kids and a lot of chaos, it really helped save time and avoid mistakes.

I made a list of a few staples that I needed, like chocolate almond milk and coconut milk and asked my store manager to stock them. It took a couple of weeks, but no more driving 10 minutes for chocolate milk. The diet is getting popular, and it seems like stores are increasing the number of items they stock all the time.

Enlist the support of others. I went to specialty stores and asked for advice. Eventually I found some good places and now know a few really helpful vegans who find me products they like and search out kid friendly recipes.

Be prepared for special events like class birthdays, holidays and field trips. I keep a GFCF pizza in the freezer along with a sweet treat so I’m ready if a class party sneaks up.

Prepare a couple simple frozen meals to keep ready to heat in case you have to be away from home at mealtime. Grab and go.

When I learned that a box of GF muffin mix was 3x more expensive than my regular brand, I found a recipe I liked and mixed a big batches of dry ingredients that I stored in an airtight canister. Now instead of pulling an armload of ingredients and utensils, I just grab my canister, egg and oil and fresh muffins for breakfast without the mess and cost. Same for pancake mix.

My little guy is too young to swallow capsules and some supplements just don’t mix well with food (I learned the hard way that digestive enzymes sprinkled on spaghetti sauce or oatmeal turn thick yummy food into a watery mess) My best supplement plan was getting a bunch of plastic syringes from the pharmacy, plus a couple 2 tbsp syringes from a medical supply store. I call it “Vitamin Time” and we get silly so it is not stressful. I know, easier said than done.

The biggest surprise has been that he is eating foods he never would have before. I don’t know why the diet made him more flexible, if the enzymes make his tummy feel better so food is more appealing to him or simple luck, but Aidan is eating almost anything I put in front of him. The only meat he ever ate was in fried nugget form, but now he is eating grilled chicken, hamburger, even steak. Next I’ll have a cholesterol problem on my hands.

It seemed complicated, it seemed expensive, it seemed like a lot of work. Now it seems normal and my son seems like a different child in many ways. Seems worth it.

Enzymedica goes to Africa

What an adventure and completely eye opening experience I had on Feb 18, 2012.

As I landed in Accra, West Africa the weather was extremely hot and sticky. There were hundreds and hundreds of people that walked the streets. The culture was noticeably different right away. There were many children and families coming right up to our shuttle bus asking us for money or anything we could offer them.

Even though many in this country have nothing even close to what we have in the States, they were so sweet and all had smiles on their faces. Each person I spoke to worked as many days as they could just to survive and all were grateful for even having a job.

The customer service in the hotel was the best I have ever witnessed. They all went above and beyond to make sure all the guests were satisfied. They went as far as even learning many of the patron’s names.

As the day approached for me to head to the Life Without Barriers conference I had to figure out how to get there, as even though it was not many miles away, the traffic was very heavy. Most drove approx. 15 to 25 miles an hour, which made the trip long. It took me an hour and half by taxi to get to Tema, where the conference was being held. Along the way we drove through a town where people sell anything, mostly used items to make their living. People walk the streets with a special type of hat that holds anything from baskets to chairs on their heads. As I approached the building where the conference was, I was in amazement anyone could find it, as the dirt roads that we had to take were very tricky. There was no air conditioning in part of the building and yet even though all were baking and melting in their clothes each person had a grin that could light up a room.

The coordinators had worked with a local non-profit that allowed them to use the building. The building was gorgeous. I met the missionaries that built it and told me it was their calling to do so.

As the room filled up with parents, professionals, and loved ones wanting to learn more about how to treat autism my heart began to hurt as I knew that these families had very limited resources. I realized at that moment that no one in the States should ever complain about limited resources, as it doesn’t even compare. I learned that some villages believed that their children were possessed by demons and would perform rituals to try to free the children. Tears flooded my eyes often, as I knew it was just because they didn’t have the knowledge to know what autism was.

There were handfuls of amazing individuals there who have children with autism who have learned ways to help them and they are doing their best to spread the message. However, they need more forces and voices to help them. The job is quite big and definitely needs much attention.

I had learned of the conference and had been planning to go to Africa for personal reasons and it was by total coincidence that I was there at the same time of the conference.

I discovered the woman who was in charge, she was a doctor in New Jersey but was originally from Ghana who had a child on the spectrum and wanted to give back to her homeland. She is quite remarkable and has a very big heart. I had contacted her and let her know I would be there and would love to volunteer and speak about diet and digestion. She was so gracious and gave me part of her speaking slot as the slots had been filled.

I learned quickly about the foods available in Ghana and was able to explain how important diet is for our kiddos and give them examples of the foods they had readily available in their country. I then explained digestion and how that works in the body.

All of the people that attended received samples of Enzymedica’s Digest Spectrum. Enzymedica also donated door prizes with larger bottles and DVD’s. The families truly were grateful and it was obvious that the diet and digestion information was much needed. I know that many won’t be able to easily get Enzymedica’s products however, for those that can, I know it will help them. It was great to know we could at least help them understand the importance of diet and digestion.

This is a moment I will never forget. Parents hugged me and thanked me from the bottom of their heart. I just wish I could have done more. I can tell you that Africa will always have a special place in my heart and I felt so honored to be part of such an amazing conference.

The speakers were terrific and educated on biomedical, occupational therapy, speech language pathologist, special education and more. Huge kudos to Autism Research Institute and all of the other amazing organizations that helped sponsor this conference. And a huge thanks to Dr. Genevieve Kumapley from New Jersey, the Super Mom that put this whole conference together and let me speak as part of her speaking time.

This is a time in my life I will never forget and always cherish.

Natural Remedies & Alternative Treatments

Hi Friends!

I’m so sorry for the long absence, forgive me. It's been a busy month (when is it not?). I've missed you, how are you doing? Lots have been happening here, I’ll try to fill you in…

Mei and Min Min had coughs and colds but they were pretty mild. Some kids at school came down with gastroenteritis and of course, they caught the bug too. But overall, they’re doing great. I'm hoping we'll have 3 consecutive illness-free weekends soon, wouldn’t that be awesome?

The results for their hair analysis, urine and blood work came back. There’s a couple of things to work on, but generally lots of improvements, yeay! But the blood draw, ugh!! You KNOW how much I hate it. Though it does get better and easier. It’s still traumatic for the girls and me, but at least this time Hubby didn't nearly faint. Unlike the first couple of times remember?

Mei has oxalates issues now. ☹ Totally my bad; I didn't give their calcium supplement with meals. Classic rookie mistake. See, I told you I've lost my biomed mojo... Interestingly, Min Min's calcium dosing was the same as her sister’s, but she doesn’t have high oxalates. We're now on the Low Oxalate Diet and I make sure they have calcium with their meals now.

We had our follow up consult for CEASE therapy. After a year plus doing homeopathy, you’d think I’d have this thing down pat. But, I still managed to screw up this current protocol! Screw up aside, Mei still put on 0.5kg/ 1.1lbs in 2 weeks, woohoo!! Best of all, she kept on the weight even 1 month later. You KNOW how hard it is for her to put on weight, this was totally due to the new homeopathic remedy. I was ready to kiss the CEASE practitioner, until he started telling me off about my screw up LOL!!

Parasite cleanse is in da house! I finally sat up and took notice of the nose-picking, butt-scratching and behaviors that screamed "Worms!!" I got some black walnut and artemesia wormwood, hoping it'll work better than the worm medications. The taste? Bleurgh!! Kudos to Mei and Min Min, they've been soooo good at taking their supplements now. I'm even taking note of the moon phases, who woulda guessed?

The frequent, low-dose oral chelation is doing well, though there's been a few missed rounds:-( You'd think I'd be happy to miss a round, you know how much I love to sleep! A couple of them was because the girls were ill. But we skipped a round because I went away for the weekend to see Duran Duran in Singapore. The concert was brilliant! Wish you were there, Simon is still hot, sigh... I went with my cousin and we had a fantastic weekend in Singapore. You know, my biochemist/ scientist/ PhD candidate/ fashionista cousin? She was far too cool and sensible to slingshot her knickers at the stage hahaha!!! Btw, I got her into natural antifungals and probiotics too, guess I can't stop preaching natural remedies and alternative treatments even when I'm on a girly trip LOL!!

Min Min is now 5 years old! We threw a party at home and she thorougly enjoyed her birthday. Though she can’t wait to be 6 years old. When did we stop looking forward to growing older?

Don’t forget, the Thinking Moms will be the host for Karaoke Night at the AutismOne/ Generation Rescue Conference 2012! I’ll be flying halfway across the world so make sure you come and say hi. I’ll be decked out in Thinking Mom swag, I’ll be hard to miss LOL! I can’t promise you I’ll sing, but I’ll be there cheering you on!

Hugs and kisses,
Marissa

PS: April is Autism Awareness Month. Personally, I much prefer Autism Action Month. And no, I will not be wearing blue.

Preventing Another Generation of Children With Autism

The recent announcement regarding the new CDC study does not tell those of us in the autism community anything we do not already know.

As of today, we can now affirmatively say "Autism affects 1 in 88 children born 12 years ago, a 23% increase since the CDC last released numbers in 2009."

We have been sounding the alarm bells for years to this glaring epidemic.

All that these new numbers indicate is the fact that we are continuing to lose children at an alarmingly rapid pace. The current emphasis on awareness and genetic research has not brought us any closer to a cause. We need to focus our efforts as a global community on prevention and providing treatment and life care services for those currently affected.

The dialogue today, in the aftermath of the CDC's release with regard to what these new numbers indicate, completely misses the point. The new numbers have been equally attributed to better diagnosis, higher incidence and unknown factors. What is missing from today's dialogue is the effect autism is having on families, our society and what the unknown factors are.

Treating Autism UK - Resources in the UK

Treating Autism is a UK based charity founded and run by parent volunteers. Their members include parents and family members of people with autism, caregivers, dietitians, nurses, teachers and other professionals in the field of autism as well as adults who use biomedical approaches to improve their quality of life.

Treating Autism believes that autism is treatable through a combination of biomedical, educational and sensory approaches and the focus of the organization is in the biomedical aspect of treating autism.

The work of Treating Autism has three main strands:

1. A Membership Society that provides parents with a lifeline. Members receive a regular newsletter with developments in the biomedical and therapeutic world, a lending library of autism-specific resources, special offers with essential suppliers and discounts on conferences.

2. Local Groups across the United Kingdom where often-isolated parents can meet to discuss treatment, get support - or just let off steam.

3. Conferences and Parent to Parent events across the UK. Attendance at Treating Autism UK conferences changes lives. See www.treatingautism.co.uk/events for more info on their next conference.

Highlights and interviews with the 2011 conference speakers are now available on the Treating Autism YouTube Channel www.youtube.com/user/TreatingAutism/featured

Visit Treating Autism UK to Learn More
