“Gavin was one of your lucky grant recipients about 5 years ago. When he was 12 months old, he received the standard MMR vaccine, and went from a normal developing baby to regressing and losing language that was easy for him before that. His pediatrician noticed changes at his 15 month appointment. Along with language regression, he had no eye contact whatsoever, when he used to before, and was pretty out of it most of the time. At age 3, he was diagnosed with PDD/NOS. With therapy he improved some, but it was your grant program that made the biggest difference.
We started the diet before the grant, so he could be completely GF/CF from the start. Within 3 weeks, he had full eye contact again, and his therapists were amazed at how well he was doing. The two appointments with our local DAN doctor were so educational, and it was wonderful to finally have the answers we had been needing. The mentor support was so encouraging for me. The whole process was truly life changing for us.
Gavin would now be considered to have high-functioning autism, but you almost wouldn’t know it. I need to have him reevaluated, since we have relocated to Champaign/Urbana (from small Illinois town), but I actually have the luxury of procrastinating, since he’s doing so well on his own now. Aside from a few sensory issues, stims, a couple of food aversions (he doesn’t need GF/CF anymore, but don’t even mention cheese!) and the rare meltdown he’s pretty typical. I’m a single mom, and I’ve chosen to stay at home and homeschool my kids, so Gavin gets to be his normal happy self all the time. He really is a great kid, and I’m so SO thankful Generation Rescue was such a big part of that. I can’t thank you guys enough. We watch your show, and Gavin just loves seeing Evan on TV, so he knows there are other kids with Autism just like him. 🙂
Thank you so much!”
