“Parker has exploded with new words, and sounds. He asks for more of things by name (mainly snacks) linking a few words together. He was all but non verbal prior, with just three words or so. Yesterday, when his EI Speech therapist was over she was working on getting him to follow simple directions (touch head, nose, clap hands) as his motor planning hinders him greatly. He was actually able to follow direction, and change it up (he would normally just repeat the last direction given when she would change it up) this is also big for him, but the favorite of the day was when she pretended to sleep, and he actually went up to her , touched her......

HUGE victory yesterday with Bobby, he was in speech therapy which is clinic based, and his therapist said Bobby is the only child she's ever had that has played productively in the gym on the equipment, and it was only his second time there with her. This is a new therapy center we're trying and I've already seen huge changes. He got into the ball pit, followed directions, played productively the whole time (which he never does) and he SPOKE! My little Bobby spoke, I heard that precious little voice and he said a 4 word sentence which I have never heard. He looked at me, smiled and said "Mum, I got cards!" while holding a deck of cards he found....

Through the Rescue Family Grant I was given a basic starting point to understand my autistic child's needs. It was a foreign world to both my husband and I but we knew there has to be a way to improve her life and at least make her feel comfortable in her own skin. It taught me the basics of removing the toxins from the body and keeping track of everything that goes in and out to determine what is working. ...

Yesterday was the first day Kyla didn't cry when I dropped her off at school. This morning was the first time she didn't have a tantrum getting ready. Today when I dropped her off at school, her teacher told me that she was interacting and playing with the kids. This is a FIRST! We never had play dates because she wouldn't play with kids at all. But she said Kyla was playing and saying, "run (other child's name)!" I broke down in tears, but they were happy tears. I'm very hopeful now and never expected her to do these things. I've been so tired and have felt like a shell of a person, just going through the motions AND last......

My son has been on the gluten free, casein free diet since when he was diagnosed last year. The first thing that everyone noticed was how much his communication increased during that first week. Then his awareness improved towards his brother. Before, he had never once said his brother’s name or even paid attention to his brother until we started the gluten free, casein free diet. Over time, he continues to improve, his stimming has decreased, his eye contact has gotten better with everyone and he is understanding a lot more....

He engaged in a lengthy conversation with a mom whose son resembled Justin. Good responses from people in the waiting room - remarks like - he is so handsome, so nice and polite. After having been on this horrific journey for 15 years and the last four were the worst it is nice to receive such great praises about my son. He is achieving amazing milestones during the grant program and I am so proud of him....

Oliver has been plagued nearly non-stop with eczema all over his trunk for more than a year. With the help of steroid creams we had been able to keep it kind of under control, but he was susceptible to flare ups and his skin was never smooth. "Stories circulating online, claiming that I said my son Evan may not have autism after all, are blatantly inaccurate and completely ridiculous. Evan was diagnosed with autism by the Autism Evaluation Clinic at the UCLA Neuropsychiatric Hospital and was confirmed by the State of California (through their Regional Center). The implication that I have changed my position, that my child was not initially diagnosed with autism (and instead may suffer from Landau-Kleffner Syndrome), is both irresponsible and inaccurate. These stories cite a "new" Time Magazine interview with me, which was actually published in 2010, that never contained any such statements by me. Continued misrepresentations, such as these, only serve to open wounds of the many families who are courageously dealing......

When it comes to food, the holidays can be exceedingly difficult for our children on the spectrum along with their parents.  Many of us have grown up in homes where we equate the holidays with baking sweets.  So many delicious recipes have been passed down from generation to generation leading us to ask, “how can we possibly celebrate our very special time of the year without our traditional confections?”  I had one mom tell me that she spells the word ‘love’, F-O-O-D!...

Fall weather is upon us… and with it are many opportunities for you and your family to share new experiences together. One of the important ways to help children on the spectrum grow socially and emotionally is to try new adventures and model sharing your reactions to them. Fall is full of sensory fun -- the colors of the changing leaves, the smells of apples baking, the feeling of scooping out pumpkin seeds. As a mom of a ten-year-old son with autism and as a cooking instructor for children of all abilities, I recommend that you take some time, slow down your pace, and find a few hours on a weekend afternoon when you can try one of these fun,......

About a year ago I was having a really hard time with my 14 year-old son. Just last summer he was hitting his head so badly against the wall that I was afraid that he might crack it open. As a mother, there is nothing more frightening or painful to watch than your child physically hurting himself (or others). So I took him to see a doctor who suggested that I institutionalize my son rather than try to identify why he was self-injurious among other things. The doctor suggested that this was the best option to make sure that my daughter would have a normal home life before leaving to college....
