In life, there are moments when you know you are at the right place at the right time. This summer will mark my five-year anniversary as a staff member at Generation Rescue.
I am regularly asked how I ended up at Generation Rescue and if I have a personal connection to autism. When I first joined I did not know that I did. After learning more about autism, I realized that the individuals that Generation Rescue was helping were a lot like my brother Iain, finally shining a light on Iain’s ailments.
The following year Iain was diagnosed on the autism spectrum and we started him on biomedical treatment. Our first steps were the gluten and casein-free diet, lab testing and supplementation. Within two weeks of treatment, Iain began to come out of his shell. We saw a measurable difference in Iain’s behavior, conversations and stims, but above all, his personality and spirit began to shine through!
In addition to autism, Iain also suffers from seizures. Thankfully, with the help of a prescription drug (after many different trials) they are now under control. Nevertheless, there is no prescription drug for autism and we continue to work with Iain’s doctors to help him flourish. Over the past five years Iain has blossomed into an adult with many friends and he attends a regular day program. He works at Chili’s and soon will be attending a prom for adults with his girlfriend. Comparing Iain today to the brother I had five years ago is beyond comprehension and nothing that anyone in our family ever expected.
When the Sevenly team asked if I would consider being filmed for the Generation Rescue video I was honored, but more importantly I hope that Iain’s story can inspire other families to seek treatment for their children regardless of age, see them spread their wings and succeed.
